मणिपुर की कोम जनजाति का एक पारंपरिक पवन वाद्य यंत्र
रुसेम मणिपुर की कोम जनजाति द्वारा उपयोग किया जाने वाला बांस और सूखी लौकी से निर्मित एक वाद्य यंत्र है। यह पारंपरिक सुषिर वाद्ययंत्र एक सूखी हुई लौकी पर दो अलग-अलग स्थानों पर लगाए गए छह ट्यूनिंग नलिकाओं और फूंकने वाली एक नलिका से निर्मित है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि इस वाद्ययंत्र की ध्वनि सुरक्षा और समृद्धि के लिए देवताओं का आह्वान है, और इसका उपयोग केवल औपचारिक और मनोरंजनात्मक उद्देश्यों की पूर्ति के लिए किया जाता है। इसका उपयोग अंतिम संस्कार समारोहों में नहीं किया जाता है।
कलाकार द्वारा वाद्ययंत्र की नलिका में फूंकते हुए उंगलियों से छिद्रों को नियंत्रित करते हुए विभिन्न सुर उत्पन्न किये जाते हैं । कक्ष में वायु को अंदर लेने और छोड़ने के क्रम में जब हवा नलिका से होकर गुजरती है तो कंपन करती है, जिससे वांछित ध्वनि उत्पन्न होती है। वाद्ययंत्र, कक्ष और नलिका का आकार-प्रकार सभी इसके द्वारा उत्पन्न ध्वनि में योगदान करते हैं।
कोम लोग रुशेम को मानव संसार के सर्जक दैवीय माता – पिता के मिलन के रूप में देखते हैं। जिसमे सूखी लौकी को दैवीय माँ के गर्भ के रूप में दर्शाया गया है जबकि फूंकने और आवाज निकालने वाली नलिका दैवीय पिता का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। रुशेम की ध्वनि ब्रह्माण्ड के सृजन संबंधी विश्वास के महत्व को बताती है।
इसका उपयोग नृत्यों की संगत के रूप में किया जाता है। कलाकार द्वारा बजाई गई धुनें नृत्य की सुंदरता को निखारती हैं। सुर और ताल प्रदर्शन में ऊर्जा और उत्साह की अभिवृद्धि करते हैं। यह खुशी और उत्सव का वातावरण निर्मित करने में सहायक होती है।

RUSEM
A traditional wind instrument Kom tribe of Manipur
Rusem is an instrument made from bamboo and dry gourd, used by the Kom tribe of Manipur. This traditional wind instrument is made up of six tuning pipes mounted on the dry gourd at two different locations, and a blowing pipe serving as a mouthpiece. It is believed that the sound of the instrument is an invocation of the gods for protection and prosperity. Only ceremonial and entertainment purposes are served by the instrument, and it is not used during funeral ceremonies.
In order to produce various musical notes, the artist blows into the mouthpiece and controls the holes with his fingers. The sound is produced by inhaling and exhaling air into the chamber. As the air passes through the reed, it vibrates, producing the desired sound. The shape of the instrument, the size of the chamber, and the type of reed all contribute to the sound produced by the instrument.
Kom people view Rushem as a metaphor for the union of the divine mother and divine father who created the human world. This union is symbolized by the dry gourd as the womb of the divine mother while the blowing pipe and a buzzer represent the divine father. The sound of Rushem conveys the significance of their cosmological belief of the creation.
It is used as an accompaniment to dances. The tunes played by the performer bring out the beauty of the dance. The melodies and beats add energy and excitement to the performance. It helps to create an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
