किरात, एक छाऊ मुखौटा
किरात नामक यह मुखौटा एक शिकारी के वेश में भगवान शिव को दर्शाता है। यह पात्र महाभारत की प्रसिद्ध कथा किरातर्जुनीय से लिया गया है। पांडवों के वनवास काल के दौरान, अर्जुन ने शक्तिशाली अस्त्रों के लिए भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए घोर तपस्या की। भगवान शिव किरात शिकारी के रूप में प्रकट हुए। जब वह अर्जुन के पास पहुंचे, तो जंगली सूअर के रूप में एक राक्षस अर्जुन पर हमला करने वाला था, लेकिन उन्होंने अर्जुन को आसन्न खतरे से बचा लिया। अर्जुन ने भी तीर चलाया था और दोनों की दावेदारी के कारण उनके बीच युद्ध शुरू हुआ जहां किरात अर्जुन पर भारी पड़े, तब अर्जुन को यह एहसास हुआ कि किरात एक मानव नहीं बल्कि भगवान शिव का अवतार हैं और उन्होंने किरात को प्रणाम किया। अंततः भगवान शिव ने आशीर्वाद स्वरूप अर्जुन को पाशुपतास्त्र प्रदान किया।
परंपरागत रूप से सूत्रधार समुदाय छाऊ मुखौटा का निर्माण करते हैं। इसे बनाने के लिए यह लोग मिट्टी, मुलायम कागज, पतला गोंद, कपड़े, मिट्टी, महीन राख , रंग और गुर्जन तेल का उपयोग करते हैं। किरात की आकृति को घनी मूंछो, उभरे हुए दांतों और बड़ी आंखों के साथ एक उग्र व्यक्ति की विशेषताओं के साथ दर्शाया जाता है। मुखौटे में एक विस्तृत शिराभूषण है जिसे मोतियों, पिठ काम, फूलों, जूट के बालों, गोटे, कांच की मोतियों, ज़री और मोर के पंखों से खूबसूरती से सजाया गया है।

Kirat, a Chhou mask
Kirat is a mask representing the character of Lord Shiva in the disguise of a hunter. The character is taken from the famous story Kiratarjuniya in the great epic Mahabharata. During the exile period of the Pandavas, Arjuna did intense penance to propitiate Lord Shiva for powerful weapons. Lord Shiva appeared as Kirat – the hunter. When he approached Arjun, a demon in the form of a wild boar was about to attack Arjuna but Lord Shiva saved Arjuna from impending danger. Arjuna also shoots an arrow. Both Kirat and Arjuna were claimants. A battle started between them where Arjuna was overpowered by Kirat then he realized that Kirat was not a human but an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He bowed on the feet of Kirat and finally, Lord Shiva blessed Arjuna with Pashupatastra.
Traditionally, the Sutradhar community prepares the chhou masks. Clay, soft paper, diluted glue, fabric, mud, fine ash powder, colours, and gurjan oil are used in its preparation. The figure of Kirat is depicted with a heavy mustache, protruding teeth, and large eyes, classic features of a furious individual. The mask has an elaborate headgear beautifully decorated with beads, pith works, flowers, jute hair, tinsel, glass beads, zari, and peacock feathers.
