दंतेस्वरी- माता की कथा

मान्यता है कि पराक्रमी वीर प्रबीरचन्द्र भन्जदेव का जन्म कुम्हड़े के भीतर से हुआ था। दंतेश्वरी माता ने उन्हें स्वप्न में आदेश दिया कि वे उन्हें वारंगल प्रदेश से अपने देश ले आयें। वारंगल से लौटते समय दंतेश्वरी माता ने उन्हें आश्वस्त किया कि वे उनके पीछे-पीछे आयेंगी और जहाँ तक वे बिना मुडे चलते जायेंगे वहाँ तक उनका राज्य होगा। भन्जदेव ने ऐसा ही किया, लेकिन रास्ते में एक नदी पार करते समय देवी की पैयड़ी (पायल) की आवाज न सुनाई देने पर उन्होंने मुड़कर देख लिया और इस तरह इस नदी का नाम ही पैयड़ी पड़ गया और यह नदी ही बस्तर की एक सीमा निर्धारित करती है। दंतेश्वरी माता का मंदिर दंतेवाड़ा में बनवाया गया।
इस टेराकोटा म्यूरल में मुख्य रूप से दंतेश्वरी माता की मड़ई (मेला) का दृश्यांकन है।
THE MYTH OF GODDESS DANTESHWARI

Prabeer Chandra Bhanjdev is believed to have been born of a pumpkin. Appearing in a dream, goddess Danteswari instructed him to bring her from Warrangal to his own land. Bhanjadev followed his dream. Danteswari promised to follow him all the way to his land, provided he trusted her word and never once turned back to check her steps. In the bargain, she assured him that the land she covers on foot would also be his kingdom. Bhanjdev did not think it was difficult at all and willingly agreed. However while crossing a river the tinkling of the goddess’s Pairi or the anklet got drowned and Bhanjdev turned back and looked. As per the deal, Danteshwari vanished. The river that came to be known as Pairi after her, can still be seen flowing on the border of Bastar.
The terracotta mural mainly depicts the Madai or the shrine of Danteswari and the festival held there in her honour.
