बनबीबीर थान: बनबीबी देवी का स्थान

सुंदरबन और इसके आसपास के क्षेत्रों में एक समृद्ध पंथ परंपरा है जो इस क्षेत्र में रहने वाले लोगों के व्यवहार और गतिविधियों को ढालने में एक प्रमुख भूमिका निभाती है। यहाँ शक्तिशाली बाघ को जंगल के राजा के रूप में प्राचीन काल से ही पूजा जाता है। सुंदरबन में बाघ को बोनबीबी और अन्य स्थानीय देवताओं के अलावा बाघ देवता या दक्षिण रे के रूप में पूजा जाता है। बनबीबी को जंगल के उद्धारकर्ता के रूप में जाना जाता है और ‘बौलिस’ (लकड़ी काटने वाले), “मौल’ (शहद लेने वाले) और मछुआरों द्वारा जंगल में प्रवेश करने से पहले इस उम्मीद में पूजा की जाती है कि वह बाघ के हमले से उनकी रक्षा करेगी। बनबीबी को जंगल का संरक्षक देवी माना जाता हैं जिनका सुंदरबन में बहुत अधिक प्रभाव है। माना जाता है कि वह बाघों की आवाजाही को नियंत्रित करती हैं तथा लोगों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करती हैं एवं इसके साथ-साथ जंगल उत्पादों के संग्रहण में भी उनकी मदद करती हैं।
बनबीबी: दिखने और पोशाक में एक हिंदू देवता के समान है। कुछ स्थानों पर वह बाघ पर आसीन दिखाई गयी है। उनका एक हाथ बाघ या दुखे (एक सच्चे शिष्य) पर रखा है और दूसरा हाथ पवित्रता के भाव को दर्शाता है।
दक्षिण रे: विभिन्न प्रतिमा आकृतियों में इनको दर्शाया गया है – एक शिकारी जैसा या एक राजकुमार की शाही वस्त्र पहने हुई एंथ्रोपोमोर्फिक आकृति जैसा।
शाजंगली: बनबीबी के भाई की पीले रंग से दाढ़ी और मूंछों के साथ दिखाया गया है। इनको अधिकांश स्थानों पर बनबीबी के बाईं ओर खड़ा किया गया है।
दुखे: बनबिबिक जुहूरनामा में वर्णित एक छोटा सा लड़का जिसको एक सच्चा शिष्य माना जाता है
सिंदूर (सिंदूर), शंख (शंख से बनी चूड़ी), हरीतकी (मायराबालन), लाल कच्छा (लाल धागा), डाब (कच्चा/हरा नारियल), घट (अनुष्ठान/मिट्टी का बर्तन), धूपदानी (अगरबत्ती धारक), धुनुची (अगरबत्ती लगाने का पात्र) और प्रदीप (दीपक) आदि का भोग लगाया जाता है।

Sundarban and its adjoining areas have a rich cult tradition that plays a dominant role in moulding the behaviour and activities of the people living this region. The mighty tiger has been venerated as the King of the forest and used to be worshiped since ancient times. In Sundarban the tiger is worshiped as the TIGER GOD or Dakshin Ray in addition to Bonbibi and other local deities. Banabibi is known as the saviour of the forest and worshiped by the ‘Baulis’ (wood cutters), “Moules’ (honey collectors) and the fishermen prior to entering into the forest in the hope that she will protect them from the attack of tiger. Banabibi is the guardian deity of the forest whose influence is very much found in Sundarban. She is believed to control the movement of tigers, ensures security to the people, and helps them in acquisition of Jungle products.
Banabibi: resembles as a Hindu deity in appearance and in dress. In some places she is abode on a tiger and putting on her one hand on the tiger or Dukhe (a true disciple) and another hand indicates the gesture of purity.
Dakshin Ray: represented in various icon figures – a hunter like or prince like anthropomorphic figure wearing regal robe.
Shajangali: brother of Banabibi, a yellow colour standing icon with beard and mustache. He stands at the left side of Banabibi in most of the places.
Dukhe: a character found in Banabibir Juhurnama, a little boy considered to be a true disciple
Sindur (Vermillion), Shankha (Conchsheel made bangle), Haritaki (Myrabalan), Lal Kachha (Red thread), Dab (Raw/green coconut), Ghat (Ritual pot/earthen pot), Dhoopdani (Incense stick holder), Dhunuchi (Incense burner) and Pradeep (Lamp) are offered to Banabibi sthan.
