बनबीबी
बनबीबी की एक स्क्रॉल पेंटिंग
बनबीबी जंगल की संरक्षक देवी के रूप में जानी जाती है और जंगल में प्रवेश करने से पहले ‘बौलिस’ (लकड़हारे), “मौल्स” (शहद संग्राहक) और मछुआरों द्वारा इस आशा में पूजी जाती हैं कि वह बाघ के हमले से उनकी रक्षा करेगी। बनबीबी सुंदरबन के जंगल की प्रभावशाली संरक्षक देवी हैं । माना जाता है कि वह बाघों की आवाजाही को नियंत्रित कर लोगों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करती हैं और वन उत्पादों के संग्रहण में उनकी मदद करती हैं।
उन्हें बोनबीबी, बन देवी, ब्याघ्र देवी के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, जो सुंदरबन डेल्टा में रहने वाले हिंदू और मुस्लिम दोनों के लिए पूज्यनीय हैं। बनबीबी की कहानी को दर्शाती यह स्क्रॉल पेंटिंग हस्तनिर्मित कागज पर बना कर कपड़े पर चिपकाई गई है। यह पेंटिंग प्राकृतिक रंगों और गोंद के सम्मिश्रण से बनाई जाती है। इस पेंटिंग में गाजी पीर और बनबीबी को एक साथ दर्शाया गया है, जो जंगल में बाघों, मगरमच्छों और अन्य जंगली जानवरों के हमले से सुंदरवन के निवासियों के रक्षक के रूप में भी जाने जाते हैं। इस चित्र के अलग-अलग पटों में एक छोटे से लड़के दुखे, जिसके जीवन की रक्षा बनबीबी ने की थी, की कहानी को चित्रित किया गया है । वह एक बहुत गरीब लड़का था, जो अपनी विधवा मां के साथ रहता था। उसे उसके चाचा धोना द्वारा केदोखली द्वीप में छोड़ दिया गया था। ऐसा माना जाता है कि यह एकमात्र द्वीप अभी भी दखिन राय के नियंत्रण में है। दखिन राय को पेंटिंग में एक राक्षस के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है। दुखे को बाघ द्वारा खाया जाना था लेकिन बनबीबी ने उसकी जान बचाई और उसे उसकी माँ के पास वापस भेज दिया। वनवासी स्वयं को गरीब दुखे के रूप में देखते हैं और जंगल में प्रवेश करने से पहले बनबीबी की पूजा करते हैं।

BANABIBI
A scroll painting of Banabibi
Banabibi is known as the saviour of the forest and worshiped by the ‘Baulis’ (wood cutters), “Moules’ (honey collectors) and the fishermen prior to entering into the forest in the hope that she will protect them from the attack of Tiger. Banabibi is the guardian deity of the forest whose influence is very much found in Sundarban. She is believed to control the movement of Tigers, ensures security to the people and helps them in acquisition of Jungle products.
She is also known as Bonbibi, Ban Devi, Byaghra Devi, venerated by both Hindu and Muslim residing in Sundarban Delta. This scroll painting depicting the story of Banabibi is made on handmade paper and pasted to a cloth. It is made with natural colours, the colours are mixed with natural gum. In this painting Gaji Pir and Banabibi are shown together who were also known to be the protector of the dwellers of sundarban from the attack of tigers, crocodiles and other wild animals in the forest. In different panels the story of a small boy Dukhe was depicted whose life was protected by Banabibi. Dukhe is depicted as a very poor boy who lived with his widow mother. He was abandoned by his uncle Dhona in Kedokhali, the only island believed to be still in the control of Dakhin Rai who was depicted in the painting as a demon. Dukhe was to be eaten by the Tiger but Banabibi saved his life and sent him back to his mother. The forest dwellers identify themselves with poor Dukhe and before entering into the forest they pray to Banabibi.
