गारो समुदाय का एक पवित्र ढोल
विश्व की बहुतेरी संस्कृतियों में विभिन्न प्रकार के ढोल पाए जाते हैं और उनमें से कुछ अद्वितीय होते हैं। ऐसा ही एक उदाहरण मेघालय के गारो समुदाय का ‘लॉन्ग ड्रम’ है, जो उनके कृषि चक्र, मेलों, त्यौहारों एवं धार्मिक मान्यताओं से अविभाज्य रूप से जुड़ा है। गारो समुदाय में पाए जाने वाले ढोलों को तीन श्रेणियों में वर्गीकृत किया जा सकता है: पवित्र, समारोहिक और उपयोगितावादी। खराम अंतिम संस्कार एवं धार्मिक समारोहों और विशेष रूप से शुद्धिकरण अनुष्ठानों के समय के बजाया जाने वाला एक पवित्र ढोल है। पारंपरिक सामाजिक मानदंड के अनुसार आम लोगों को इसे छूना प्रतिबंधित है। गारो समुदाय की एक मान्यता अनुसार, ढोल प्रतीकात्मक रूप से एक शक्तिशाली आत्मा का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है एवं इसे केवल इसके स्वामी, स्वामी के रिश्तेदारों और पुजारियों द्वारा ही बजाया जा सकता है।
परंपरागत रूप से इस पवित्र ढोल को गंबरी या किम्बल वृक्ष की लकड़ी से तैयार किया जाता है, एवं कहा जाता है कि केवल नोकमा (पुजारी) को ही इस ढोल को तैयार करने का अधिकार है। यह भी माना जाता है कि गाय का चमड़ा एवं उसे बांधने के लिए प्रयुक्त चमड़े की पट्टियां इस पवित्र ढोल की आत्मा की पोशाक हैं और वह कभी भी अन्य ढोलों के लिए प्रयुक्त नहीं की जा सकती। पारंपरिक गारो समाज में यह पवित्र ढोल शक्ति और संपदा का प्रतीक होने के साथ-साथ अलौकिक विश्व से संबंध स्थापित करने का माध्यम भी है। इसके अलावा, कराम को एक महत्वपूर्ण पारिवारिक विरासत भी माना जाता है, जो पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी हस्तांतरित होते चली आ रही है।

The Sacred Drum of Garo Community
Various types of drums are native to many cultures around the world, and some are unique and profound. One such example is the ‘long drum’ of the Garo community of Meghalaya which is deeply entwined with the agricultural cycle, fairs and festivals, and their religious traditions. Garo drums may be classified into three categories: sacred, ceremonial, and utilitarian. Kharam is a sacred drum played during funerals and religious ceremonies, particularly during purification rituals. Traditional social norms prohibit common people from touching it. According to a Garo belief, the drum metaphorically represents a powerful spirit, and it can only be played by the owner, his relatives, and priests.
Traditionally, this sacred drum is crafted from Gambri or Kimbal trees, and it is said that only Nokma (Priest) has the right to prepare this drum. It is also believed that cowhide and tying leathers are the attire of the spirit possessed by this sacred drum. These are never used to cover other drums. In traditional Garo society, the sacred drum symbolizes power and wealth and it serves as a link to the supernatural world. Moreover, the Kram is also considered to be a treasured family heirloom that is passed from generation to generation.
