नर्मदा व जेहाला नदियों की कथा

रेवा विन्ध्याचल पर्वत पर रहता था और वहाँ लगने वाली जंगली जड़ियों, हर्रा-बहेड़ा आदि के लाद (व्यापार) का काम करता था। उसके दो बेटियां थी नर्मदा और जेहाला। बड़े होने पर नर्मदा का विवाह सोनभद्र से तय हुआ। नर्मदा कुछ उजले रंग की और जेहाला जरा साँवले रंग की थीं। इसी कारण जेहाला, नर्मदा से जलती थीं। विवाह के दिन जेहाला ने नर्मदा से कहा कि कपड़े – गहने पहनकर बारात देखकर आना चाहती है। नर्मदा ने उसकी बहन की इच्छा तुरन्त पूरी कर दी। बारात गाँव पहुँचे इसके बहुत पहले ही सजी-धजी जेहाला सोनभद्र के सामने पहुंची। सोनभद्र मोहित हो गये, सोचा दुल्हन जब खुद आ गई है तो अब और आगे जाने से क्या लाभ । बारात जेहाला को लेकर वहीं से लौट पड़ी। इधर जब नर्मदा को अपने साथ हुए धोखे का पता चला तो वह गुस्से से उफनती, गर्जन करती हुई भागीं। उनके शरीर की हल्दी छिटक-छिटककर दोनों ओर के पहाड़ों में फैल गई। नर्मदा का विकराल रूप देखकर जेहाला और सोनभद्र अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भागे। उन्हें यूँ भागता देख नर्मदा को ऐसा विषाद हुआ कि वह पलटकर अलग ही दिशा में चली गई और उसने फिर कभी विवाह नहीं किया। नर्मदा कुँवारी नदी कहलाती हैं और लोगों को आज भी उनके कुँवारे रह जाने का अफसोस है। मंडला के आस-पास के क्षेत्र में आज भी बारात नर्मदा पार करने से पहले उनसे माफी माँगती है। भेड़ाघाट क्षेत्र में संगमरमर पत्थरों के बीच जगह-जगह रामरज (पीली मिट्टी) भी मिलती है, जिसे लोग नर्मदा के शरीर से छिटकी हुई हल्दी मानते हैं।
नर्मदा, जेहाला, रेवा और सोनभद्र सभी नदियों के नाम हैं जो इस क्षेत्र से होकर बहती हैं। यहाँ दिखाई गई मूर्तियों में नर्मदा व जेहाला के पहाड़ों से घिरे कुण्ड के अलावा रेवा, सोनभद्र और जानवरों की मृण मूर्तियाँ हैं।
THE MYTH OF THE RIVERS NARMADA AND JEHALA

Reva lived on Mount Vindhyachal and dealt in herbs and jungle medicines. He had two daughters, Narmada and Jehala. When Narmada came of age, her marriage was fixed with Sonbhadra. Narmada was fairer than Jehala and the latter Jehala resented this strongly. On the wedding day, Jehala requested Narmada to let her wear the bridal dress for only as long as it would take her to go and have a look at the marriage procession. What objection could Narmada have to this little wish of her sister’s? However, when Sonbhadra saw Jehala in that dazzle he fell for her. Thinking it needless to continue when the bride was herself there, he turned back with Jehala. Hearing this Narmada stormed ahead thundering and in that heat, the turmeric of her body spilled all over the hills around. Sonbhadra and Jehala. seeing the enraged Narmada ran in the opposite directions. Narmada was so pained at this that she herself turned around and vowed to remain unmarried all her life.
Narmada is known as the virgin river and the local people till date have not forgotten her insult. Even today any marriage procession crossing Narmada, does not forget to ask for her forgiveness. The yellow of her body is still seen spilt as ramraj (yellow ochre clay) between the marble rocks at Bhedaghat near Jabalpur. Narmada, Jehala, Sone and Reva are all rivers that traverse this region. Here, one can see their figures surrounded by the hills with the animals that inhabit it.
