तपोई की कथा

सात भाईयों की इकलौती बहन त-पोई इतनी लाडली थी कि बचपन में सोने की गेंद से खेलती थी। माँ-बाप की मृत्यु के बाद सातों भाभियाँ भी त-पोई को बड़े लाड़ से रखती थीं। एक रोज भाईयों को वाणिज्य के संबंध में दूर देश जाना पड़ा। इस बीच एक. बुढ़िया के भड़काने पर भाभियों ने त पोई को त्रास देना शुरू कर दिया। फूल सी त पोई को खाने में कभी बासी रोटी मिलती तो कभी कुछ भी नहीं और रोज बकरियों का रेवड़ लेकर जंगल जाना पड़ता। एक दिन एक बकरी खो गई। भाभियों की मार के डर से त-पोई घर नहीं लौटी। अंधेरी रात में वह जंगल में से रही थी कि तभी भाई लौट आये। बहन की दशा देख उन्होंने उसे माँ-मंगला की तरह सजाया और अपनी पत्नियों को पूजा हेतु बुलाया। सिवाय छोटी भाभी के जिसने इन दुर्दिनों में भी त-पोई का ख्याल रखा था. बाकी सब भाभियों की नाक उसने खड्ग से काट दी भाभियों को भूल का अहसास हुआ और तब भाईयों ने उनकी सोने की नाक बनवा दी।
त पोई की यह कथा उड़ीसा में बहुत लोकप्रिय है और इसी के साथ माँ मंगला की पूजा का भी यहाँ विशेष महत्व है।
THE STORY OF TA-POI

Ta-poi, the one sister among seven brothers was a darling of the house and even had a golden ball to play with. After the demise of the parents the sisters-in-law took as much care of her. But once the brothers had to leave for far quarters due to business reasons. In their absence their wives fell for the evil plans of a wicked old hag and started to pester Ta-poi. They gave her stale bread to eat and sent her to the woods with the cattle for the whole day. One day one goat got lost. Scared of the sisters-in-law’s wrath, Ta-poi did not return home. As she sat crying in the darkening forest, the brothers returned. Seeing the wretched state of their sister, they dressed her up as the goddess Mangala and asked their wives to worship Ta-poi. She cut off the noses of all her sisters-in-law sparing only the youngest one who had taken care of her even in these bad days. The six women repented very soon and so they got a golden nose replacement each.
This story of Ta-pol rendered in traditional Pala-Chitra style is very popular in Odisha and the worship of goddess Mangala also holds a special significance.
