टोडा दक्षिण भारत में तमिलनाडु के नीलगिरि जिले में बसा एक पशुपालक आदिवासी समुदाय है। इनके परिवार स्थायी गाँवों “मंड” या “माड” में रहते हैं। जिनके आस-पास ही एक चारागाह होता है, प्रत्येक “मंड” में आमतौर पर लगभग पाँच घर या झोपड़ियाँ होती हैं, जिनमें से तीन आवास के रूप में, एक डेयरी के रूप में और दूसरी रात में बछड़ों को आश्रय देने के लिए उपयोग की जाती है। प्रत्येक परिवार के हिस्से में एक घर “अर्श”, और गाँव की जमीन का एक हिस्सा होता है। टोडा खुद को “तोरा” कहना पसंद करते हैं। वे टोडा भाषा बोलते हैं जो द्रविड़ भाषा परिवार से संबंधित है। टोडा लोगों द्वारा पूजन हेतु प्रयुक्त पवित्र स्थल “फो” कहलाता है। “फो” को एक वृत्ताकार आधार पर बनाया जाता है और इसकी छत शंक्वाकार होती है जो सूखे सोला वन घास से बनायी जाती है। इनका आवास “अर्श” खास आधे बैरल के आकार का होता है। इनकी सामाजिक, आर्थिक और आध्यात्मिक प्रणाली लंबे सींगों वाली पहाड़ी भैंसे है। भैंस से प्राप्त उत्पाद (मुख्य रूप से दूध, मक्खन और घी) इनके आहार का अभिन्न अंग है। टोडा की न केवल अर्थव्यवस्था और सामाजिक जीवन पारंपरिक रूप से भैंस पर केंद्रित है वरन इनके धार्मिक व्यवहारों का एक बड़ा हिस्सा भी इस पशु और इसकी देखभाल पर केंद्रित है। आज भी जारी पारंपरिक रिवाजों में श्रम विभाजन भी शामिल है। पुरुष भैंसों की देखभाल करते हैं और महिलाएं अनुष्ठान के साथ-साथ व्यावहारिक उद्देश्यों के लिए भी इस्तेमाल की जाने वाली शॉल पर कढ़ाई करती हैं। यह आवास संकुल टोडा जनजाति के जीवन और संस्कृति की पूरी समझ प्रदान करता है।

Todas are a pastoral tribal community inhabiting Nilgiri district of Tamilnadu. Their families reside in permanent villages called Mund having each a certain tract of grazing ground surrounding it. EachMundusually comprises of five houses or huts, three of which are used for dwelling purpose, one as a dairy and the other for sheltering the calves at night. Each minor division of the family has one house Arsh in the Mund, and a part of the village land. The Todas prefer to call themselves Tora. They speak Toda, a language belonging to the Dravidian linguistic group. The sacred place for worshing by Todas is called Pho. The pho is built on a circular base and its roof is conical in shape and is made of dry sola forest grass. Their dwelling Arsh form a peculiar kind of oval pent shaped (half-barrel-shaped). Their social, economic and spiritual system centred on the long horned hill buffaloes. The produce derived from the buffalo (mainly milk, butter and ghee) is integral part of their diet. It is not only economic and social life, traditionally centred on the buffalo, the greater part of the Toda religious observance is also focused on this animal and its care. Division of labour is also included in their traditional customs continuing even nowdays. Men care for the buffaloes and women do embroidery on shawls used for ritual as well as for practical purposes. This dwelling complex provides a complete understanding of the life and culture of the Toda tribe.
