सर्पदेवी मनसा का स्थान व कथा

सर्पदेवी मनसा शिव की ही बेटी उनके मन में इच्छा जागी कि पृथ्वी लोग जितना शिव पूजते उतना उन्हें भी पूजें चाँद सौदागर नाम का प्रसिद्ध व्यापारी शिव अनन्य भक्त मनसा सोचा यदि चाँद सौदागर उनकी पूजा करने लगे। तो सभी देखा-देखी मनसा भक्त जायेंगे। मनसा अपनी बात चाँद सौदागर कहला भेजी। चोंद सौदागर ने टूक शब्दों उन्हें पूजा देने इंकार कर दिया। क्रुद्ध मनसा चाँद सौदागर छह बेटों को डस लिया। सातवें बेटे लखिन्दर का विवाह चम्पानगर की बेहुल्ला सुन्दरी से हुआ था। मनसा कहला भेजा कि लखिन्दर उसके विवाह रात उसेगी चाँद सौदागर लोहे का घर बनवाया और कारीगर हिदायत दी उसमें कोई छेद हो लेकिन वास्तु नियमानुसार कम सुई जरूरी बेहुल्ला भर जागती रही पौ फटने के पहले एक क्षण को उसे झपकी आई और तभी छेद में आये नाग लखिन्दर को उस लिया। मानने वाली बेहुल्ला केले तनों को जोड़कर बनाई गई नाव में लखिन्दर सिर अपनी गोद रखकर चल पड़ी। रास्ते कितनी मुसीबतें कितने घाटों को पार करती वह आखिर नेताई घोबी के घाट पर पहुंची देवताओं वस्त्र धोता था। वहीं ठहरकर उसके काम हाथ बँटाने लगी। उसके धोये कपड़ों अदभुत सुगन्ध आती थी, जिस देवताओं का भी ध्यान गया। पूछने नेताई धोबी कहा कि आजकल कपड़े उसकी बेटी घोती है। अगले दिन नेताई धोबी बेहुल्ला साथ लेकर पहुंचा देवताओं प्रसन्न होकर उसे कोई वर माँगने को कहा बेहुल्ला लखिन्दर तथा अपने सभी जेठों को पुनर्जीवित वर माँगा। मनसा भी बेहुल्ला की लगन देखकर प्रसन्न हो गई थी इसलिये उसने भी देवताओं के साथ बेहुल्ला को वर दिया। लखिन्दर, बेहुल्ला तथा अपने सभी पुत्रों को पुनः जीवित देखकर चाँद सौदागर मनसा को जल चढ़ाने लिये तैयार गया। अलबत्ता चूँकि वह दायें हाथ से शिव को जल चढ़ाता था इसलिये मनसा वह बायें हाथ ही जल चढ़ाने लिये राजी हुआ। वह भले ही बायें हाथ मनसा को जल चढाता हो पर तब सारे लोग मनसा को पूजने लगे और गाँव-गाँव उनका स्थान बन गया।
THE MANASA MYTH

Manasa was the daughter of Shiva. She wanted the people on earth to worship her as much as her father. In those days Chand Saudagar was a famous merchant who was also a great devotee of Shiva. Mansa thought that if Chand Saudagar worshipped her, the rest would follow suit. Chand Saudagar however refused to do so. Furious at this, Manasa bit all his six sons to death. The seventh son, Lakhinder’s marriage had been fixed with Behulla the beautiful of Champanagar. Mansa declared her intention of killing him on the night of his marriage. For them Chand Saudagar got a house made of iron without an opening. However, in keeping with the Vaastu they had to keep a needle’s eye hole in some corner. Behulla did not sleep a wink the entire night. Just before dawn she dozed off for a second and in that little while Lakhinder was bitten by the snake.
Undaunted, Behulla sat herself in a banana stem boat with her husband’s head in her lap and set sail into the unknown waters. After many days and nights she reached the shore where Netai dhobi, the washerman lived. He used to wash the clothes of the Gods and Behulla started helping him in that. The Gods were very pleased with his work and enquired after the lovely perfume emanating from their clothes. The next day Netai took Behulla along, and the Gods asked her to make a wish. Behulla promptly asked for the life of his husband and his six brothers. Manasa was so pleased with Behulla’s diligence that she became the first one to fulfill her wish. Seeing his sons come alive, even Chand Saudagar agreed to worship Manasa. And even though he only agreed to do so with his left hand, the important thing is that following him all the people began revering her as a goddess.
In the Manasa Sthan here, apart from the Manasa chali or her abode, Manasa ghut or the special ritual pitcher for offering water, can also be seen the Bankura horses that are offered to propitiate her.
