राजा सैलेश की कथा एवं स्थान

दरभंगा जिले में महाजर, दुसाद आदि जाति के लोगों के बीच राजा सैलेश की देवता के रूप में प्रतिष्ठा है। कुश नामक घास से जन्मे, अत्यंत वीर इस योद्धा ने अपने भाई मोतीराम के हित में आजीवन ब्रह्मचर्य का कठोर व्रत लिया था। सावन महीने के सोमवार तथा बुधवार को इनकी पूजा के समय इनके स्थान पर टेराकोटा की निम्न मूर्तियाँ चढ़ती हैं: हाथी पर आसीन सैलेश तथा मोतीराम, दो घुड़सवार, दो शेर, हीरावन सुग्गा, दो सिपाही, दो मालिनों के वेश में राजकुमारी रेशमा व कुशमा तथा चुहरमल, जिससे राजा सैलेश का युद्ध हुआ था। पुरखों को देव तुल्य स्थान देने की सर्वव्यापी लोक वृत्ति का यह एक उदाहरण है।
यहाँ इसी कथा का चित्र रूप में निरुपण भी किया गया है।
THE MYTH OF KING SAILESH

In district Darbhanga, the figure of king Sailesh enjoys the status of a deity among the lower castes viz. Mahajar, Dusad etc. Born of Kusha, a kind of grass, the great warrior is said to have vowed life long celibacy in the interest of his brother Motiram. His worship takes place in the month of Shravan (July-August). Terracotta figurines of Sailesh and Motiram riding an elephant, two horse riders, two lions, a parrot called Hiravan, two soldiers, princess Reshma and Kushma along with Chuharmal the adversary, are offered at his shrine. It is an example of the deification of an ancestral hero. On the wall behind these figures is painted the same myth using traditional colours.
