कोटा नीलगिरी की तीन महत्वपूर्ण जनजातियों में से एक है। कोटा किवदंती के अनुसार टोडा, कोटा और कुरूंबा तीनों सगे भाई थे तथा वे नीलगिरी पहाडियों के पहले निवासी थे। कथा के अनुसार ये तीनों कम्बतरायन देवता के पसीने की तीन बूंदों से जन्में थे। इनका अलगाव देवता के एक बार यह पूंछने पर हुआ कि उन्हे क्या चाहिये। उनमें से एक ने कहा मुझे कला की प्रतिभा दें परिणाम स्वरूप वह लोहारी, संगीत, शिकारी, कुम्हारी तथा रस्सी बनाने की कला में निपुण हुआ, वह कोटा बना। दूसरे ने कहा, मुझे भैसें दे दो जो मेरी मित्र, संबंधी तथा रक्षक बने, वह टोडा बना, दूध वाला बना। तीसरे ने कहा, मुझे वह षक्ति दो जिससे उन सभी का नाश कर जिन्हें मैं पसन्द नहीं करता, वह कुरूम्बा बना जिससे बाकी के दोनों घबराते थे। यह संबंध अभी भी जारी है।
कोटा बस्तियाँ पहाडों की तलहटों में सड़के के दोनों ओर बने कतारबंध मकानों में स्थित होती है। घर दो कक्ष युक्त होता है, पहला कमरा बड़ा होने के कारण अटारीयुक्त रसोई और क्रियाकलाप क्षेत्र में बटा होता है। दूसरे कमरे का एक कोना नहाने के लिये सुरक्षित रहता है जबकि बाकी का इस्तेमाल अनाज और कृषि उपकरणों के भंडारण हेतु किया जाता है।

Kota is one of the three major tribal groups of Nilgiris. According to a Kota legend, the Kota, the Toda and the Kurumba were real brothers and that they were the earliest in habitants of the Nilgiri hills. These three, as the legend goes, were created from the three drops of the Kambatrayan god’s perspiration. Their separation took place when the god once asked them what they wanted one of them said give one talents of art’ and he became a Kota, who later proved to be an able blacksmith, musician hunter, potter and rope and umbrella maker; another said ‘give me buffaloes who can be my friend, relative and savior’ and he became a Toda dairy man, ‘Give me the power to destroy those whom I do not like’ said the third brother who became a Kurumba, possessing powers of sorcery and black magic which the others two drended.
The Kota settlements situated on the foot hills have rows of closely built houses on both sides of a street. The house consists of two rooms. The first room being the largest is divided into a Kitchen with an attic and a living space having a platform made of purposes. The second room has one corner reserved as bathing place while the rest is used for storage of grains and agricultural implements.
