कामधेनु

समुद्र मन्थन से निकले चौदह रत्नों में से एक कामधेनु गाय देवताओं द्वारा वशिष्ठ को प्रदान की गई थी। यह समस्त कामनाओं की पूर्ति करने वाली तथा समस्त पशु-धन की जननी मानी जाती है। इनकी मृणमूर्ति कुम्हारों द्वारा भारत के प्रायः सभी प्रान्तों में अर्ध-नारी, अर्ध-गौ के रूप में निर्मित की जाती है। सम्बलपुर क्षेत्र के गाँवों में इनके अनेक स्थान है, जहाँ कार्तिक माह में यह मूर्ति कामनापूर्ति हेतु चढ़ाई जाती है।

Kamdhenu, the wish fulfilling goddess is regarded as one of the fourteen precious things emerging out of the Samudramanthan, or the churning of the ocean. It is supposed to the wish- giver and was bestowed upon the sage, Vasishtha by the gods themselves. The terracotta image of Kamdhenu as half woman and half cow is made by potters all over India and is revered as the mother of all cattle. In the Sambalpur region of Orissa itself, there are many shrines dedicated to her, where in the month of October, this image is offered by the devotees for wish-fulfilment.
