नव दुर्गा

कैनवास पर बनी इस स्क्रॉल पेंटिंग में नवरात्रि के दौरान विशेष रूप से पूजी जाने वाली देवी पार्वती के नौ रूपों को दर्शाया गया है। कहा जाता है कि वह अपने एक जन्म में सती या दक्षायिनी के रूप में पैदा हुई थी। उसके बाद के अवतार में, वह पहाड़ों के राजा – हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती के रूप में पैदा हुई थी। देवी दुर्गा के कई रूप हैं; इनमें से नौ को एक साथ नव दुर्गा के नाम से जाना जाता है। इन नौ रूपों में से प्रत्येक का अर्थ शक्ति है। नौ रूप है शैलपुत्री (पर्वतराज भगवान हिमालय की पुत्री ), ब्रह्मचारिणी (समर्पण की देवी), चंद्रघंटा (राक्षसों का नाश करने वाली), कुष्मांडा (ब्रह्मांड की सृजक देवी), स्कंदमाता (मां और बच्चों की देवी), कात्यायनी (शक्ति की देवी), कालरात्रि (सौभाग्य और साहस की देवी), महागौरी (सौंदर्य की देवी) एवं सिद्धिदात्री (अलौकिक शक्तियों की देवी)। यहां दिखाई गई स्क्रॉल पेंटिंग एक अनूठी लोक कला परंपरा है, जिसे ‘पश्चिम बंगाल के पटचित्र’ के रूप में जाना जाता है। स्क्रॉल पेंटिंग आम तौर पर प्रसिद्ध पटुआ/चित्रकार समुदाय द्वारा तैयार की जाती हैं, जो अपने स्क्रॉल के साथ एक गांव से दूसरे गांव की यात्रा करते हैं और गाते हुए कहानियों का वाचन करते हैं तथा इसके एवज में भोजन और पैसा प्राप्त करते हैं। स्क्रॉल हस्तनिर्मित कागज के पट पर बने होते हैं जिन्हें एक साथ सिल दिया जाता है और मजबूती के लिए उन्हें कपड़े पर वानस्पतिक गोंद से चिपकाया जाता है। पारंपरिक रूप से चित्रों में प्राकृतिक रंगों का उपयोग किया जाता है। इस कला रामायण, महाभारत, मंगल काव्य और पुराण किंवदंतियों जैसे हिंदू महाकाव्यों के दृश्यों को दर्शाया जाता है। यह कलारूप समकालीन सामाजिक घटनाओं के अपने अद्वितीय चित्रण के लिए भी जाना जाता है।

This scroll painting on canvas depicts the nine manifestations of goddess Parvati, especially worshipped during Navaratri. She is said to have been born as the Sati or Dakshayini in one of her births. In her subsequent incarnation, she was born as Parvati, daughter of the King of mountains – the Himalaya. Goddess Durga has many forms; nine of these are together known as Nava Durga. Each of these nine forms stands for Shakti or Power. The nine forms are Shailaputri (daughter of the King of Mountain, Lord Himalaya), Brahmacharini (mother of devotion), Chandraghanta (destroyer of demons), Kushmanda (goddess of the Cosmic egg), Skandamata (goddess of mother & children), Katyayani (goddess of power), Kalaratri (goddess of auspiciousness and courage), Mahagauri (goddess of beauty) and Siddhidhatri (goddess of supernatural powers). The present scroll painting is a unique folk art tradition, popularly known as the ‘Patachitra of West Bengal.’ Scroll paintings are generally prepared by the widely acclaimed patua/chitrakar community, who travel from one village to another with their scrolls, play narrative songs, unfold the stories, and get food and money in exchange. The scrolls are made on sheets of handmade paper bonded on cloth with vegetable adhesives to make them stronger. Natural colours are traditionally used in the paintings, and the art depicts scenes from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Mangal Kavyas, and Puran legends. The artform is also known for its unique portrayal of contemporary social events.
