अगरिया मध्यप्रदेश के जनजातीय समुदायों में से एक है जिनका पारम्परिक व्यवसाय लोहा गलाना है। अगरिया नाम हिन्दु देवता ‘अग्नि’ या उनके जनजातीय असुर जो अग्रयासुर की लौ से जन्मा था से आया है। यह जनजाति मुष्यत: मध्यप्रदेश के मडला, डिंडोरी, बालाघाट और सीधी जिलों में तथा सीमावर्ती छत्तीसगढ़ के बिलासपुर, राजगढ़, कवर्धा जिलों में निवास करती है। अगरिया गध्यप्रदेश की इकलौती जनजाति है जिसने प्राचीन काल से लोहा पत्थर की खदानों में काम किया है। वे लोहे के औजार बनाते है हिन्तु कुछ अभी भी लौह प्रागलन के अपने पारम्परिक व्यवसाय को अपनाये है और कुछ अन्य कृषि उपकरण बनाते है।
केवल कुछ अगरिया ही अभी भी लोहा पिघलाने का अपना पारंपरिक व्यवसाय करते हैं। शेष खेती के औजार बनाने का काम ही करते हैं। मैकाल पर्वत श्रृंखला से गहरे लाल रंग का पत्थर चुनकर अयस्क प्राप्त करते हैं। अयस्क तथा कोयले को बराबर मात्रा में भट्टी में मिलाकर, पांव से चलने वाली धोंकनियों से जिसमें हवा पोले बांस से होकर जाती है, उसे गरम करते हैं। यह प्रक्रिया घंटों जारी रहती है जिससे बने धातु-मैल का भट्टी से बाहर निकलना रूक जाता है तो यह समझा जाता है कि प्रकिया अब पूरी हो चुकी है। इसके बाद दोनों धोकनियों को उनके भट्टी से जुड़े रहने के स्थान की मिट्टी की छपाई को तोड़कर वहां से जमा हुआ प्रगलित लोह पिंड प्राप्त कर लिया जाता हैं। इसे कुछ समय तक पीटा जाता है तथा तैयार होने के बाद उससे वांछित आकार देकर सामान तैयार किये जाते हैं।
अगरियाओं का पारिवारिक देवता दुल्हादेव हैं वन प्रातरो में वे बूढ़ादेव जो गोंडों के सबसे बड़े देवता हैं, की पूजा करते हैं उनके व्यवसाय पर राज करने वाला देव लोहासुर है, जिसके विषय में माना जाता है कि वह लोहा गलाने की भट्टी में निवास करता है वे लोहारी के औजारों की दशहरा और फागुन में पूजा करते हैं।

Agaria is one of the tribal communites of Madhya Pradesh whose traditional occupation is iron smelting. The Agaria name comes from the hindu god of fire Agni or their tribal demon who was born in flame Agrayasur. This tribe largely inhabited in Mandla, Dindori, Balaghat and Sidhi districts of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining districts of Bilashpur, Rajgadh, Kawardha districts of Chattisgarh. Agaria is the only tribe of Madhya Pradesh who has worked in stone iron minning since ancient times. They manufacture iron tools but a few still following their traditional occupation of iron smilting and other few makes agricultural impliments.
They get iron-ore from the maikal range, selecting stones of a dark reddish colour only. They mix ore with charcoal in equal quantities in the furnace, the heat being produced by a pair of foot bellows and conveyed to the furnace through bamboo tubes; it is kept up steadily for hours. Soon as the flow of slag ceases, it is supposed that the process is over. The bellows are then removed breaking away the clay joints and deposited lump of molten iron is picked, beaten for some time and then ready into various kinds of objects.
Agaria’s family god is dulha deo. In the forest tracts they also worship budha deo, the chief god of the Gonds. The deity who presides over their profession is loha-sur the iron-demon, who is supposed to live in the smelting-kilns. They worship their smelting, implements on the day of Dussehra and during Phagun.
