कुम्भ कला की उत्पत्ति कथा

यह उस समय की बात है जब पृथ्वी पर कोई जीव-जन्तु नहीं थे। तब आसमान में लगातार सात सूरज चमका करते थे। चारों ओर ऊँचे-ऊँचे पहाड़ थे और उनके बीच विशाल जल-राशि थी। उसी समय गुरू शिदवा और गुरू शिदवी स्वर्ग से उतरकर संसार की रचना करने के लिए पृथ्वी पर आये। पहाड़ खोदकर, उन्होंने उस विशाल जल-राशि को बर्मा की ओर बहा दिया और स्वयं पहाड़ पर गुफा बनाकर पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए ध्यान करने लगे। तभी आकाशवाणी हुई- “पहाड़ की मिट्टी खोदकर एक बड़ा घट बनाओ और उसे गुफा के उत्तरी मध्य भाग में स्थापित कर, सात दिन तक उसकी पूजा करो। इससे तुम्हारी कामना पूरी होगी।” ईमा लैमरेन शिदवी ने पहाड़ की मिट्टी से पहला घट बनाया और सातवें दिन उसी घट में से गुरु सन्नामही को पुत्र के रूप में पाया। गुरु सन्नामही ने सात में से छः सूरज मार गिराये तथा क्रमशः पानी, धरती व आकाश के जीवजन्तु बनाये और अन्त में मनुष्य को भी बनाया अपना काम पूरा हुआ देख कर, गुरु शिदवा, गुरू शिदवी अंतर्धान हो गये। लेकिन, जाने से पूर्व ईमा लैमरेन शिदवी ने कुम्भ बनाने की आदिकला, पेन्थोईबी को सौंप दी जिन्होंने फिर यह कला मणिपुरी स्त्रियों को सिखाई।
मणिपुर में स्त्रियां ही मटके बनाती हैं तथा इस कार्य के लिए वे कुम्हार के चाक का प्रयोग नहीं करतीं। वे वर्तन के चारों ओर स्वयं घूम-घूमकर बर्तन को आकार देती हैं। इस तरह तैयार किये मटके कुम्हार के चाक पर बने मटकों जैसी ही सुघड़ गोलाई लिये रहते है ।
THE MYTH OF THE FIRST POT

This is of the time when there were no creatures on this earth and there were seven suns that dazzled the sky day and night. Surrounded by hills and mountains was one huge water body and there was nothing else. At that time Guru Shidva and his wife Ima Lemren Shidvi descended from the heavens to create the world. They dug up the mountain, let the water flow towards Burma and themselves made a hut on another hill begin praying for a son. One day there was a proclamation from above, “Make a pot from the mountain clay, place it in the north of the cave and worship it for seven days, on the last day your wish would be fulfilled.” On the due date Guru Sannamahi was born inside the earthen pot made by Ima Lemren Shidvi. The first pot thus acted as a womb. Guru Sannamahi then went on to extinguish the six suns, create the creatures of water, land and air and in the end also the man. Seeing their task accomplished Guru Shidva and Guru Shidvi decided to depart but, before departing Ima Lemren Shidvi passed on the art of pottery to Panthoibi, who subsequently handed it down to the women of Manipur.
In Manipur it is the women who pot and do not use the wheel. They themselves revolve round the stationery pot to give it the desired shape. The symmetry is so perfect that it can easily be compared with the wheel thrown ones.
