ग्राम देव का स्थान

भील, भिलाला, राठवा, कोली आदि लोगों का प्रत्येक परिवार गाम देव को, जिनका स्थान जंगल में साग के पेड़ के नीचे होता है, बीस-पच्चीस साल में एक बार “जातर” चढ़ाता है। प्रत्येक जातर में छोटे-बड़े मिलाकर कुल एक सौ बीस घोड़े होते हैं जिसे “घोड़ों की पलटन” कहते हैं। इसके साथ इतने ही, घर के आकार के “ढाबू” भी चढ़ाये जाते हैं कुम्हार द्वारा बनाये गये घोड़े इत्यादि, आदिवासियों द्वारा जीवित मानकर ही देव को चढ़ाये जाते हैं, ताकि वे उन पर बैठकर घूम-घूमकर गाँव-घरों की रखवाली कर सकें । गाम देव के स्थान पर साग की लकड़ी के बने खूंटे भी होते हैं जिन्हें “चोलिया” कहते हैं तथा इन्हें विशेष अवसरों पर पत्तों के तोरण से सजाया जाता है।

Once in twenty years, families belonging to Bhil, Bhilala, Rathwa and Koli tribes offer a Jatar at the shrine of Gamdev under the Sag or the teak tree. Each of these Jatar comprises of one hundred and twenty terracotta horses, also known as ‘the army of horses. Along with horses, they also offer ‘dhabu’ or clay forms resembling houses. In the minds of the tribals, these earthen objects represent actual living horses which are used by the deity for patrolling and protecting their villages and fields. The shrine also calls for the mandatory presence of poles called ‘cholia’ that are made out of the sag wood itself and are on special occasions decorated with fresh leaves.
