डूमादेव की कथा

पेन्ड्रावण्ड गाँव के एक आदिवासी लड़के व लड़की के बीच ऐसा अभूतपूर्व प्रेम पनपा कि जिससे उस इलाके के चर-अचर, समस्त प्राणी ओत-प्रोत हो गये। लेकिन एक दिन उस आदिवासी युगल में कुछ अनबन हो गई और दुखी लड़की तालाब की सीढ़ियों पर आँसू बहाती बैठी रही। उसकी सखी ने, यहाँ तक कि जानवरों ने उसे मनाने की खूब कोशिश की, लेकिन उसके आँसू थमने का नाम नहीं लेते थे। आखिरकार लड़की ने तालाब में कूदकर प्राण त्याग दिये। कुछ देर बाद लड़के लड़की के माता-पिता, मित्र बान्धव ने भी तालाब में कूदकर प्राण दे दिये। तभी से इन्हें डूमादेव के नाम से पूजा जाता है तथा पोला त्यौहार पर यहाँ मिट्टी की बेन्द्री चढ़ाई जाती हैं, जो उस उदास लड़की की तरह गाल पर हाथ रखे। बनाई जाती है।
उस आदिवासी लड़की को डोकरी देव या पेन्ड्रावण्डिन माय के नाम से तथा आदिवासी लड़के को डोकरा देव के नाम से भी पूजा जाता है। इस टेराकोटा म्यूरल में तालाब व उसकी सीढ़ियों पर बैठी आदिवासी लड़की, अन्य जानवर, वनस्पति जगत आदि दर्शाये गये हैं।
THE MYTH OF DUMADEV

The elders tell of the love lore of a lad and girl in the village Pendravand, so pure and divine that it permeated all the men, women, plants and animals of the region. One day, something amiss happened between them that drove the girl to such a disconsolate state that she sat on the steps and wept. Her friends tried their best to cheer her up and all the animals of the forest followed suit, but to no avail. Nothing seemed to console her. Finally she jumped in the pond and ended her life. Thereafter, the aggrieved boy, the girls’ parents, and all the animals of the jungle followed her and gave up their lives. The spot came to be known as the shrine of Dumadev, or the deity of the drowned’ in memory of all those who drowned in the water here. This adivasi girl is worshipped as Dokridev or Pendravandin Mai and the boy as Dokradev. A votive terracotta figure of Bendri, or the pensive she-monkey holding her face in her hands, is also offered at the shrine at the time of the Pola festival.
