अतीत में समुद्र का विस्तार और रेगिस्तान में रेत क्यों है जैसे बहुत से रहस्यों पर प्रकाश डालते पोखरण के कुम्हारो का मिथकों का अनूठा संसार है। स्वार्णिम रेत के टीलों को भेदकर मिट्टी निकालते और उससे आत्मजा सा प्रेम रखते पोखरण के कुम्हारों की बात ही अलग रही है। मिट्टी की परख और भट्टी के अनुभव में इनका कोई सानी नहीं है। इनका बनाया बर्तन हो या मूर्ति मजाल है कि भट्टी में जाकर टूटे-फूटे या ताप की कमी और अधिकता के कारण चिन्ह भी आएं । मिट्टी तैयार करने से लेकर रंगाई, चित्रकारी, भट्टी में बर्तन पकाने तक हर एक कार्य निर्धारित है और हर एक अपने दायत्वि को लग्न और आत्मीयता से निभाता है वह कलाकृतियों के सौंदर्य में देखते ही बनती है। कला और शिल्प के इस अनूठे जगत में कागज की लुगदी से लेकर पत्थर तक को अपने जादुई हाथों से खूबसूरत आकारों में ढालते कारीगरों में मिट्टी को पत्थर की तरह मजबूत बनाने का अदभुत कौशल है।

The potters of Pokhran have a unique world of myths that throws light on many mysteries like the expansion of the sea in the past and the presence of sand in the desert. Having keen affection for clay, these potters possess different values in pottery as they express their art through the medium of clay and mud. Clay is acquired by an excavation of glittering sand dunes. These potters acquire excellent knowledge of testing clay and furnace, which is indomitable. The utensils or idols made by them are flawless because they do not break in the furnace and don’t require extreme care. Every step of the process is fixed, from preparing the clay to colouring, painting, and firing. Diligence and sincerity can be easily seen in the beauty of artefacts made by them. In this unique world of art and craft, these artisans possess the wonderful skill of making clay as strong as stone.
