रावण
(लकड़ी का एक मुखौटा)
लकड़ी का यह मुखौटा महान हिंदू महाकाव्य रामायण के एक चरित्र रावण का है। इसके तीन भाग हैं; एक मुख्य बड़ा चेहरा और मुख्य सिर के पार्श्व भाग से जोड़े जा सकने वाले चार और पांच चेहरों के दो वियोज्य हिस्से। सामान्यतः इस तरह का मुखौटा बनाने के लिए परंपरागत रूप से गम्हार की लकड़ी की एक स्थानीय प्रजाति का उपयोग किया जाता है। यह मुखौटा आमतौर पर नृत्य या मुख खेल उत्सवों में उपयोग किया जाता है, जो चैत्र (अप्रैल-मई) के अंत में आयोजित किए जाते हैं और मानसून की शुरुआत से पहले ज्येष्ठ (मई-जून) तक जारी रहते हैं। इसकी प्रस्तुति ढांक और झांझ की लयबद्ध ध्वनियों के साथ दी जाती है और कृषि गतिविधियों के प्रारंभ करने के उचित समय में इस तरह के लोकनृत्य आयोजित किए जाते हैं। इसके अलावा, यह नृत्य ग्राम चंडी, जो एक संरक्षक देवी हैं, को प्रसन्न करने के लिए भी किया जाता है, जो आशीर्वाद प्रदान करती हैं और बुरी शक्तियों को दूर भगाती है।

Ravan
(A wooden mask)
This wooden mask represents the character of Ravana taken from the great Hindu epic -Ramayana. It has three parts; a main big face and a detachable set of four and five faces attached to the lateral portion of the main head. Traditionally, a local species of Gamar wood is generally used to make such a mask. The mask is usually used in dance or mukha khel festivals, which are organized at the end of Chaitra (April-May) and continue till Jaishtha (May-June), before the onset of monsoon. At the time of performance, it is accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of Dhank and Cymbal, and such kind of folk performance is held in an ideal time to start agricultural activities. Moreover, this dance is performed to propitiate Gram Chandi, a female guardian deity who bestows good wishes and drives away evil powers.
