घराट गेंहूँ तथा अन्य अनाजों को पीसने का एक पारम्परिक यांत्रिकीय उपकरण है जाता है। यह पारम्परिक उपकरण मुख्यतः उत्तरी भारत के पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों में पाया जाता है जहां ये हिमालय घाटी में प्राकृतिक रूप से बहने वाले जल के प्रवाह से स्वतः ही चलता है। घराट की संपूर्ण संरचना में पत्थर व काष्ठ निर्मित कई भाग होते हैं। ‘पनियाल’ घराट के महत्वपूर्ण भागों में से एक है जो काष्ठ निर्मित नलिका होने के साथ जलहरी तक पानी को पहुँचाती है, ‘जलहरी’ एक गोलाकार पंखा नुमा काष्ठ संरचना है जो लकड़ी के धारदार पंखों युक्त होती है। ‘रिदी‘ निचले भाग में लगी एक सकरी नलिका के साथ एक शंकवाकार खोखला पात्र है। अंतिम रूप से ‘घाट’ और ‘तली’ पत्थर से बनी गोल समान आकृति की संरचनायें हैं जिनमें ‘तली‘ स्थाई रूप से जमीन पर स्थापित होता है और ‘घाट‘ तली पर चलित अवस्था में स्थित होता है।
घराट के संचालन के लिये एक विषेष ऊँचाई जहां पानी रखने हेतु कुंड या टंकी बनाई जा सके की आवश्यकता होती है। इस कुंड या टंकी से पनियाल के द्वारा पानी ‘जलेरी‘ तक पहुँचता है। जब पानी पंखियों पर गिरता है तो ‘जलेरी‘ चलती है। घाट को घुमाने के लिये लोहे की छड़ मदद करती है एवं घराट के लगातार घूमने से अनाज पिसता है। वर्तमान में यह पारम्परिक तकनीक विलुप्त होने की कगार पर है।

“Gharat” is a traditional mechanical device for grinding wheat and other grains. This traditional object is mostly funnel in the hilly region of northern India, where it is automatically run through the flow of water from the Himalayas hills. A complete set of “Gharat” has many parts made of stone and wood. Apart from the important part of the Gharat is Paniyal which is a long wooden cannel through wich the water is diverted to Jaleri is a circular wooden aperture filled with bladed wings. Ridi is a conical shaped hollowed container with a narrow cannel fitted on lower portion. Finally Ghat and Tali are two similar circular stone structures, among which the Tali is permanently fixed on the ground and the Ghat is movably fitted on Tali (Functioning) for operation of Gharat a particular height is required where the water reservoir is made. The water from this reservoir is allowed to flow through Paniyal to the Jaleri. When the water falls on the wings the Jaleri is moves. The move of the Jaleri in forced through iron rod to rotate the Ghat and the continuous rotation of Ghat grind the grains. Now a day this technology be observed at the border of extinction.
